Ureterostomy is a surgical procedure in which an opening is created from one or both ureters, the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, through the abdominal wall to divert urine out of the body. During the procedure, the ends of the ureters are brought through the abdominal wall to form a stoma, and a urinary collection bag is attached to collect urine. Complications associated with ureterostomy can include infection at the stoma site, urinary leakage, or blockage of the stoma. Additionally, patients may experience skin irritation or breakdown around the stoma due to contact with urine. Long-term complications might involve issues related to the stoma, such as narrowing or retraction, and potential problems with kidney function if the underlying condition continues to progress.
