A shave biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove a superficial layer of skin for diagnostic purposes. It is commonly performed on raised skin lesions, such as moles, skin tags, or suspected skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. During the procedure, a healthcare provider uses a small, sharp blade to shave off the top layers of the skin, typically involving the epidermis and sometimes part of the dermis, depending on the depth of the lesion. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area before the shave biopsy, ensuring the patient experiences minimal discomfort. The main reasons for performing a shave biopsy are to diagnose benign or malignant skin lesions, investigate unexplained growths, or confirm suspicions of skin cancer. It is especially useful for lesions that are raised or confined to the top layers of the skin, where deeper tissue sampling is unnecessary. The tissue removed is sent to a laboratory for histopathological examination to determine the nature of the lesion. Complications from a shave biopsy are generally mild and may include bleeding, infection, or scarring at the biopsy site. There is also a possibility of incomplete removal of the lesion, particularly if it is deeper than anticipated, necessitating further treatment. Some patients might experience changes in skin pigmentation or a slight depression at the biopsy site as it heals.
