A laminotomy is a surgical procedure where part of the lamina, a section of bone in the vertebra that covers the spinal canal, is removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Unlike a laminectomy, where the entire lamina is removed, a laminotomy only removes a portion, preserving more of the bone and supporting structures. This procedure is typically performed to treat conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or bone spurs that compress the nerves and cause symptoms like pain, numbness, weakness, or difficulty walking. The main cause for a laminotomy is the need to alleviate nerve compression caused by degenerative changes in the spine, trauma, or congenital abnormalities. By creating more space in the spinal canal, the procedure helps relieve pressure on the affected nerves, reducing pain and improving mobility. While laminotomy is generally considered a safe and effective procedure, it does come with potential complications.
