Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring normal tear drainage from the eye into the nasal cavity when the nasolacrimal duct, which carries tears from the eye to the nose, becomes obstructed. This obstruction often leads to chronic tearing and eye infections. During DCR, a new drainage pathway is created by connecting the lacrimal sac, which collects tears, directly to the nasal cavity, bypassing the blocked duct. This is typically done by making an incision near the inner corner of the eye and creating an opening between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity. The procedure is most commonly indicated for conditions such as nasolacrimal duct obstruction, which can be congenital or acquired due to infections, trauma, or tumors. Complications associated with DCR can include infection, bleeding, or scarring at the surgical site. There may also be risks of persistent or recurrent obstruction, which could necessitate further intervention. Other potential issues include nasal or sinus complications, such as epistaxis (nosebleeds) or sinusitis, and the possibility of impaired tear drainage if the new passage becomes obstructed or does not function properly. Despite these risks, DCR is generally a successful procedure for relieving symptoms associated with tear duct obstruction, improving quality of life by alleviating chronic tearing and related discomfort.
