Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond what is necessary for thermoregulation. There are two main types of hyperhidrosis: primary (focal) and secondary (generalized). For mild cases, over-the-counter antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can help reduce sweating by blocking sweat glands. For more severe cases, prescription-strength antiperspirants or oral medications such as anticholinergics may be recommended. Botox injections are another treatment option, as they temporarily block the nerves that stimulate sweating. For persistent cases that do not respond to these treatments, surgical options such as sympathectomy, which involves cutting nerves that trigger sweating, or iontophoresis, a procedure that uses electrical currents to reduce sweating, may be considered.
